What is NET?

NET is a peer-to-peer mesh networking protocol for the browser. There's no game server: every player's browser links straight to every other player's. NET's anchor only introduces you to each other and lists the open fights; it never runs the fight.

Is peer-to-peer safe?

Every link is encrypted twice: NET's own Noise session (ChaCha20-Poly1305), authenticated with the fight's key, on top of WebRTC's DTLS. While a link is relayed through the anchor, the anchor only forwards packets it can't read or forge. All that passes between players is the fight itself: where the knights are, the blows, the names and the score. It all runs in your browser's sandbox, so nothing is installed and nothing on your computer is reachable. One honest trade-off: on a direct link, as in any voice chat or peer-to-peer game, the other players' browsers can see your IP address.

Is NET free?

Yes. NET is free and open source: Apache-2.0, and its browser SDK is MIT or Apache-2.0, so you can use it in your own game, commercial or not. And since players connect to each other, there's no game server to rent as more people play. The anchor that introduces players is part of NET too: this game uses NET's public one, and you can run your own.

How you're connected

When you join, your browser reaches every player in the fight. You start on a link relayed through the anchor, within about a second, while NET tries for a direct one behind it. If a strict router won't allow direct, you stay relayed and still play. The pause menu shows how many of your links are direct, and F4 shows each one.

Press F4 any time, and again to close it: a panel on NET as it runs, in your own browser. In a fight it shows each player you're linked to, whether the link is direct or relayed through the anchor (and why, if a direct one didn't work out), the latency there and back and how steady it is, and the data going each way. Below, a live map of the whole mesh: every player a node, placed so that the quicker two are to each other, the closer they sit, with the links between them, yours lit up and packets running along them. At the bottom, NET's own counters. It only looks: nothing in the fight changes, and players only measure their links for it while someone has it open.

Who runs what

Your knight runs on your own machine, so your moves have no delay. Everyone sends what they own 120 times a second (60 in a PvP fight of more than 8), and only what's changed of the rest. Your blows are worked out on your machine as you swing; what they do is dealt by the struck player's machine. The enemy waves, the props and the score are run by the leader: the first player still in the fight.

When the host leaves

The fight goes on. Whoever started it is only the first in it. If the leader quits, or drops for 4 seconds, the next player by join order takes over: the enemies where they stand, the loose weapons and props, the waves and the score. The fight is listed again under the same name, so others can still join. Only a blow in the very last moment can be lost.
